What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are a type of restoration that rebuilds smiles that are missing one or several teeth in a row. They are anchored in place by a dental crown that’s included on either side which is permanently bonded to either your natural teeth or dental implants, depending on your circumstances. Usually made from durable, lifelike materials such as porcelain or composite resin, they contain the right number of artificial teeth (or pontics) that it takes to refurbish your grin. Plus, they’re color-matched to your remaining pearly whites for seamless results that no one will notice.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are two types of dental bridges so before we can move forward with treatment, you must first have a consultation with Dr. Atluri. She’ll examine your mouth to establish your current oral condition and offer a professional recommendation of one or the other, based on your circumstances. The different kinds are:

Traditional Dental Bridge

This option is best if you’ve lost at least one tooth and have relatively healthy natural teeth on either side of the gap. This is because the dental crowns on either side will fit over them on each end of the space in your smile. For them to fit correctly, Dr. Atluri will remove some of the enamel so the restoration lines up properly with your pearly whites. If they’re not strong enough to withstand this preparation, then you might do better with an implant bridge.

Implant Bridge

This type may be recommended if you have lost three or more teeth consecutively or have decayed, damaged, or worn-down teeth. Instead of securing the dental crowns to your teeth, you’ll undergo an implant procedure to insert support rods (abutments) directly into your jaw. They’ll fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration before your dental bridge can be placed over them.
