The American Dental Association recommends in addition to brushing your teeth twice a day, that you floss daily, too. Unfortunately, however, only about 30 percent of adults actually do this important step. In fact, about one third of American adults admit to never flossing at all, which can be extremely dangerous for your oral health. Flossing not only keeps your gums healthy, but it also cleans about 30 percent of the surface of the teeth that cannot be reached by brushing alone. So, what can be done to help make it easier to complete this essential part of your oral hygiene routine? Here’s a closer look at one solution that could solve this pesky problem.
String Floss vs. Water Floss
When it comes to flossing their teeth, many people struggle with regular string dental floss. Whether it’s due to dexterity issues, discomfort, or it’s simply too hard to maneuver the string throughout the mouth, it can be difficult for them to stick with a consistent flossing routine.
However, water flossing (or water irrigation) can be used instead of string floss to gently remove plaque and debris from between the teeth with a stream of pressurized H2O. This method is ideal for patients with orthodontic equipment like braces, as well as for those who have difficulty accessing their entire smile with traditional options. In fact, using a water irrigator has been shown to remove nearly 30 percent more plaque than regular dental floss!
Should I Try Water Flossing?
When it comes to flossing, the best method for your smile is the one you’ll actually use. That means if water flossing is more comfortable or convenient, then you absolutely should choose that method over string. The good news is that using a water irrigator is very easy.
All you need is fresh tap water. You can even use whichever temperature you prefer, whether it be ice cold or warm. Most devices allow you to change the pressure of the stream, depending on your individual comfort level and how much debris is between your teeth, but experts use the lowest setting to begin. Then simply run the wand along the gum line and allow it to stream. Food and debris will fall out from between the teeth, and you can simply allow the dirty water to dribble into the sink as you progress. Then, once complete, simply rinse your mouth out with water or mouth wash to clear away any remaining particles.
Remember, flossing daily is an essential part of your at-home oral hygiene routine- one that can reduce your risk of cavities and gum disease and clean a full third of your tooth’s surface that brushing alone can’t access. So, stop struggling with string floss. Speak to your dentist about the benefits of water flossing today, and enjoy all the perks of clean, healthy teeth and gums by simply harnessing the amazing power of water!
